Scientific findings:Research has determined that the antioxidant power of the pomegranate comes predominantly from the polyphenol punicalagin (1,2). While many pomegranate products boast of high ellagic acid content, ellagic acid is highly insoluble in water and poorly absorbed in free form (8,9,10). As well, antioxidants extracted and isolated from their natural source may actually increase free radical occurrence in the body. Ellagic acid is most bioavailable when the body creates it from punicalagin. Punicalagin has up to 10 times more antioxidant potency than ellagic acid, is 100% watersoluble, and has an absorption rate of 95%. What are free radicals and what causes them?
Free radicals do occur naturally, but in quantities too low to disrupt the body's state of balance.
