Tocotrienols are members of the vitamin E family. Unlike some vitamins which consist of a single compound, vitamin E consists of eight different compounds: four tocopherols and four tocotrienols (designated as alpha, beta, gamma, and delta). Alpha-tocopherol has largely been considered to be the most important, however, emerging research has proven this understanding wrong. In order to get the benefits of Vitamin E, the full spectrum of all of the compounds must be taken. The most common sources of Vitamin E - soy, corn, cottonseed, canola, and sunflower oils - contain mostly tocopherols and little or no tocotrienols while synthetic Vitamin E contains only Alpha tocopherol. Tocotrienols are 40 to 60 times more potent than tocopherols as antioxidants and studies confirm their functions in maintaining a healthy cardiovascular system. Tocotrienols are preferentially accumulated in the skin and help to protect it against the aging effects of exposure to ultraviolet radiation, pollution, cigarette smoke, and other environmental and biological stress factors.
